A total of 754 motorists were caught driving under the influence in the first four months of this year. That’s an increase of 48 percent from the same period last year, according to fresh figures from the Mobile Police(UP).
Head of UP Runar Karlsen says to the radio channel P4 that they have had a particular focus on drunk driving this year.
– This means that we test more people for blood alcohol content, that we have better intelligence on which vehicles that are often used for driving under the influence, and we have got a new instrument that reveals people driving under the influence of drugs,including pills, he said.
There is also little to suggest that motorists on Norwegian roads are slowing down. So far this year, over 24,000 motorists have been caught speeding, which is about the same level as last year.
– I think both that so many people are speeding, and that so many are driving under the influence is worrying, Karlsen says.
The Head of UP gives notice that there will be many inspections in the summer, the time of the peak months for fatalities on Norwegian roads.
– This way we can contribute to decline of the number of people killed on the roads.
