A truck company has been fined 200,000 kroner after a driver attempted to tamper with the tachograph on board a wagon train.

Inspectors from Statens Vegesen discovered that the tachograph was manipulated so that the driver could turn it on and off, according to newspaper Adresse.

During the inspection in Trondheim it was discovered by the Road Administration that a button in the cab made it so the driver could avoid driving and rest provisions, which are designed to prevent accidents.

– We want to crack down on such behavior, which is why sanctions are a powerful tool, says Bjarne Sandnes, senior engineer in Statens Vegesen to Adresse.

According to the Public Roads Administration it has registered five to six similar cases on Norwegian roads earlier this year. In all cases, the vehicles belonged to Eastern European companies.

Driving and resting regulations apply within the EEA and Switzerland.
