28 million children worldwide have been driven from their homes due to violent conflicts. In addition, almost as many children left their homes in search of a better life, according to a new UNICEF report.

The report states that while children make up one third of the world population in 2015, they constitute nearly half of all refugees. The number of displaced children has doubled over the past decade.

– The important thing is that these children during transit remain children. They must be treated as children. They deserve to be protected and they need access to services such as education, says program director Ted Chaiban of UNICEF in Geneva.

According to the report, there are 10 million child refugees in the world and 1 million asylum seekers at children’s age who have not received their application for settlement. In addition, 17 million children are displaced within their own countries due to conflict.

45 percent of children refugees are coming from Syria and Afghanistan, according to UNICEF.
