Health Minister Bent Høie believes the so-called virgin check is not health care, but a help to oppression.

The Health Minister enters into the debate about virginity checks initiated by columnist Isra Zariat at NRK news Opinion.

“This takes place in Norway. We do not know the extent, but we know that some young girls from minority backgrounds are taken to the doctor by their parents or relatives who want to investigate whether they have ever had sex with anyone, ” Høie writes in his speech.

He writes that he has contacted lawyers to get some answers on the legality of the virginity  checks.
“We have several different laws and regulations that stipulate what should be prioritized by health care in the Norwegian health service, and which states that healthcare professionals should always give considerate and   properly professional care to their patients.

But there is no explicit ban of this type of examinations. It should not be necessary, “writes Minister of Health.

Høie he says both hope and believe that most doctors refuse to make these kinds examinations, but that unfortunately there are some doctors who are willing to make them.

“It is a gross violation of a young person, which is against the values which governs the Norwegian health service .

Such an examination has no medical justification and does not promote good health. On the contrary. It will be perceived as humiliating  and a violation. ”
