More voters would have supported a ‘nationalist’ party

If Norway had a more nationalist party, an even greater proportion of the electorate would have voted for it, believe election researchers. But it is difficult to establish new parties in Norway.

‘It’s probably true that a part of the electorate would like to vote for a more nationalistic party’, said election researcher, Johannes Bergh at the Institute for Social Research of Our Country (Institutt for samfunnsforskning til Vårt Land).

He noted, however, the difficulty in establishing a new party in Norway, and the FRP already represents right-wing populist currents.

‘The fact that Norway has had a moderate right-wing, populist party for many years, which has expressed anti-elitist sentiments, and attitudes critical to immigration, and have entered those into the political system, has meant that the even more right-wing currents have not gotten an extreme outlet’, believes the election researcher.

On Thursday, initiator Hans Lysglimt Johansen, presented the ‘Alliance Norway out of the EEA’ (Alliansen Norge Ut Av EØS) Party. He hopes to garner the necessary 5,000 signatures by the New Year, so to be registered as a new party. As the name suggests, the core issue will be to get Norway out of the European Economic Area (EEA).
