Warning against winter tires in summer

Changing tires is a common task in Norway, at least twice a year! Photo: NTM

Surveys show that one in five drive through the summer on winter tires. The insurance company, Tryg, fears fatal consequences.

‘’Many people think they save money by driving with winter tires as if they were year-round tires. But then you overlook the dangers of spike-free winter tires on summer roads’’ said car insurance director, Jeanett Tennefoss of Tryg Forsikring.

She pointed out that spike-free winter tires have far worse road grips than summer tires. On dry roads, the braking distance becomes considerably longer. On wet roads, there is a risk of water planing at lower speeds than with summer tires.

“The extra braking distance can be decisive and cause collisions, injury and death during critical braking” she said.

In southern Norway, the change of tires should happen on the first Monday after Easter. In Northern Norway, drivers can delay tire changes until May 1st.

I have driven on winter tires all year round in the highlands of Scotland for many years and totally dispute the idea that they are dangerous. Obviously these are non spike tyres. They work every bit as well up to speeds of 110km per hour. They are no less economical on fuel and last about the same time as Summer tyres.

    • Most so-called winter tyres are in fact all year tyres. Proper winter tyres, with or without studs, are not suited for bare roads.

  2. Right now it appears like WordPress is the preferred blogging platform available
right now. (from what I’ve read) Is that what you are using on your blog?

    • We do indeed use WordPress (MH Newsdesk).
Must admit that I personally don’t like the new Gutenberg interface much, but it works for me when I mix with the Classic “block”. A nice new feature is reusable “blocks”.
