All along the coast of Nordland Ostfold the extreme weather Tor caused the ice in many areas to be greatly weakened. Now the NVE warns people against traveling on the ice.The last week in January / February the weather was mild with great downpourings of rain intermittently . This has lead to the ice in the lowlands on the coast in many areas dissolving or cracking in a big way.Precipitation as rain and melting provides high flow. This weakens the ice below where water flows under the ice, says Ragnar Ekker, isvarsler in NVE. The inlet, outlet and narrow straits are especially vulnerable. The ice also is weakened along the shore at high water.
In Finnmark and Troms, and generally in the mountains, the ice is now passable on lakes where water does not flow under the ice or regulations bring hotter water. Some exceptions apply to the largest lakes. It is very difficult to detect locations with thin ice. Be patient until the ice in the lowlands areas is thick enough again, Ragnar Ekker from NVE advices.
