Young people are increasingly dependent on the mobile phones, and almost half of drivers aged 18 to 29 are using social media while driving a car.

Distraction from driving is the contributory cause of three out of ten fatalities. Many people are using the phone and social media even while behind the wheel, NRK reports. And the younger drivers are the worst.

“There is a clear trend in the figures that the use of mobile phones in traffic increases with a decline in age. The idea that this may be the start of a wave of distracted drivers is scary,” says Petten Berg, Head Engineer of the Engine department in Storebrand.

According to a survey by Norstat, the use of mobile devices while behind the wheel provides 22 to 164 times higher risk of accidents than when driving without using a mobile phone.

Illegal mobile phone use, which is one of the main reasons why there are so many traffic accidents during the summer months, if caught by police using a mobile phone while driving gives you a 1,700 kroner ticket. The Ministry of Transport recently issued a proposal to introduce point removal from drivers licenses. The consultation deadline is in September.
