When the Soccer World Cup in Russia begins in a few days, Germany is the team most Norwegians support, according to a survey conducted by Ipsos on behalf of the TV distributor RiksTV.

21% of respondents said ‘Germany’ to the question of which national team is the TV favourite during this year’s World Cup. Secondly, England received 15%, followed by Brazil by 12%.

It seems that the older you are, there’s more support for Germany. A total of 37% of men between the ages of 60 and 99 stated that they are supporting Germany during this year’s World Cup.

‘’Germany won the World Cup in 2014, in addition to a strong showing during the European Championships in 2016, where they were beaten by France with two goals in the semifinals. It is natural that many men are expecting Germany to go a long way this year,’’ said Commercial Director of RiksTV, Ole André Skarbøvik.

Germany is also the favourite for people in general by 25%, followed by England, which is the favourite of 18%,especially among those between the ages of 30 and 39, with 30% for England. Women, however, mostly like Iceland and Denmark, both of which received 19% of the votes.

“That so many men support England is probably due to England’s general football history. There are many who like the England World Cup, after all, it’s been a long time since 1966. The fact that most women are holding to Iceland is probably due to the impression that Iceland did it very well during EM two years ago. They just beat

England in the eighth finale, and generally amazed fans at the 2016 championship,” said Ole André Skarbøvik to RiksTV.

In Oslo, it is Germany that took the victory by 27%, while in Western Norway, 25% cheer for England. In Akershus, however, Sweden is the biggest favourite. 17% of respondents from Akershus voted for the neighbouring country as their favourite, quite closely followed by Germany and Iceland, both with 16%.
