Airfare does not affect flight security

Swedish Aviation Safety Expert, Hans Kjäll, says there is no connection between airfare and flight safety.

According to the Swedish aviation safety expert, there are differences in aviation security between different parts of the world.

“We have looked at low-cost airlines, but there are no simple connections between low price and poor aviation security. Security is different in different regions,” he says.

Africa and Indonesia

He highlights Africa as the region with the least flight safety.

“In Africa, the accident risk is 10 to 15 times greater. There are countries that do not have air safety infrastructure. As long as they do not have that, it’s difficult,” he explains.

Asia, Kjäll believes, is safer, with the exception of Indonesia. Indonesian airlines have previously been banned from flying to both Europe and the United States.

“In Asia, security is higher in the eastern parts, but the exception is Indonesia, which has had many accidents,” he says.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has a blacklist with an overview of both airlines and regions that do not have sufficient safety and security in place.

Lion Air, who was responsible for the aircraft that just had an accident outside Jakarta in Indonesia Monday morning, has previously been on this list but was removed a couple of years ago.
