Tighter holiday budgets means that Norwegians choose well-known and more traditional resorts. This year, nearly 450,000 Norwegians had summer vacation in Denmark.

Neighboring south tops the list of countries to which Norwegians visit during the summer holidays, according to a survey that has been performed by SpareBank 1.

Two other countries also stand out as our most popular vacation destinations: Spain and Sweden, where respectively 428,000 and 420,000 people are traveling.

– We choose traditionally our neighboring countries, and sunny Spain has always been a popular vacation destination. We know these countries well and Norwegians travel to them with ease, says consumer economist Magne Gundersen from SpareBank 1.

Further, follow Greece, Italy and the UK. Turkey falls sharply back, only 77,000 people have stated that they will go there.

This is half of last year and is according to Gundersen, due to uncertainty because of the war in Syria.

Fewer trips abroad

Fewer Norwegians than before are traveling overseas holiday this summer. This is mainly due to the economy: a weak Norwegian krone which makes it more expensive to vacation abroad, poor prospects for jobs and the economy, as well as a downturn in the oil industry.
