The north of Norway is getting more and more popular among foreign tourists, with a fourfold in the past ten years. The Northern Lights Tourism generates the highest profit within Norwegian tourism.

“We managed to create growth and demand in a normally low season”, says Cathrine Pia Lund of Innovation Norway to NRK news. The visits from foreign tourists to the north of Norway have increased with 378 percent since 2006, the same year that Innovation Norway and their partners began marketing the Northern Lights. Troms had the biggest increase since 2006, while Finnmark had the smallest increase in northern Norway.

“The challenge we are facing now is to get people to travel further north, also from Tromsø. Most tourists travelling from Europe, the USA or Asia believe that Tromsø is far enough north”, says CEO Trygve Nygård of the organization Glød, that offers trips to the north of Norway.

“Although Finnmark has the smallest increase in volume of the northern Norwegian countries, it is equally important to have profitable guests”, says tourism chief Hilde Bjørkli of  NordNorsk Reiseliv. “Northern Light Tourism definitely generates great profits. Tourists who travel in wintertime spend more money during their vacation than the traditional summer tourist”, she says.
