The number of cases of passengers who make trouble on Norwegian airline has increased by up to nine times in the past ten years. Easy access to alcohol is thought to be the main reason.

The Civil Aviation Authority’s statistics, as published by the newspaper,Parat Aviation, show that cases of passengers who behave badly increased from 14 to 123 in the period 2007 to 2017.

Most reported cases of bad behaviour involve harassment of fellow passengers and aircraft crew, smoking in the toilet and travellers refusing to comply with safety instructions.

The flight crew believes that the development can be linked to easy access to alcohol, as well as the fact that for commercial reasons, it has become less comfortable to be a passenger on the aircraft, partly because it has become narrower.

The head of the Norwegian Pilots Association, Petter Førde, told the newspaper that it is, in practice, the cabin service crew who assess the situation if there are problems with passengers.

‘’If we are notified of a badly behaved passenger, there is only one thing to do.We go to the nearest airport. Such a landing with, for example, a Boeing 737 could soon rise to a cost of NOK 100,000,maybe more. The fine goes directly against the passenger.
