Two weeks prior to the 300,000 students taking over the reading rooms across the country, several thousand are still without a place to stay.
Only in the capital 7,000 are on the waiting list for student housing, NRK news reported.
According to Student Association in Oslo and Akershus (SiO), there is a record number of applicants who are without housing, and it is worst in the major student cities where many hundreds are waiting in line to get assigned to a dorm room.
The allocation regulations for student housing prioritizes students who have housing already, freshmen who reside outside Oslo and Akershus, and international students.
Because of the huge pressure on student housing, have many dabbled in the private rental market. Landlords of flats suitable for students say to NRK that they have received up to 60-70 calls on apartments in a short time.
The last five years there have been 45,000 more students, while only 7,743 new student residences have been built, the Norwegian student organization student survey shows.
