Neither the Norwegian government and royal family will be represented at the Paralympics in Sochi. The reason is Russia's conflict with Ukraine.
The plan was originally that Health Minister Bent Høie (H) would represent the Norwegian government during the Games. However, during a press conference Tuesday afternoon stated Foreign Minister Brende (H) that the visit has been canceled.
- We face a completely clear violation of international law by Russia when it comes to the military escalation in Ukraine. Russia violation of Ukrainian territorial integrity, namely their borders and their sovereignty, says Brende .
- In such a situation - where we can not guarantee that Russia will refrain from any escalation of this conflict - it is not appropriate to send a government minister to Sochi, continues the Foreign Minister.
