At the first day of his trial, on Wednesday, a 23-year-old pleaded guilty to having fought along with the extremist group IS . He denies,however , ever being a terrorist.
His 46-year-old co-defendant denies culpability for both charges.
The first day of the trial in the Oslo City Court was delayed half an hour because the parties were not in place, but starting at 9:30 the was in session.
The 23-year-old Chechen, who is a Russian citizen, went to Syria in August 2014 and didn’t return until the spring of 2015. His counsel Svein Holden, stated in advance of the trial that his client denies culpability for entering into a terrorist pact, but plead guilty to fighting as a part of the IS Army in Syria.
The 46-year-old man claims he did everything he could to get away from it IS in Syria. According to his own claims, he got away to Turkey and then back to Norway by pretending to be ill.
– My client denies culpability for both charges. He confesses to having traveled to Syria, but not to have joined the IS.
