Fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces is reported in the northern suburbs of the capital Kyiv, according to AFP.

According to eyewitnesses, gunfire and explosions can be heard in the Minsk Massif and Obolon areas, which are less than 10 kilometers from Maidan Square in the city center.

Photos on social media show tanks rolling through the Obolon area.

Loud explosions were heard in the morning in the center of Kyiv.

Ukraine’s Deputy Interior Minister Yevhen Yenin claimed that the explosions came from a Ukrainian missile defense system “which shot down Russian missiles.”

Kyiv is located about 200 kilometers from the border with Russia, but only 100 kilometers from the border with Belarus. Large Russian forces have moved ever closer to the city in the last 24 hours, which is home to almost 3 million people.
