Fewer farmers in Norway than ever before

For the first time, there are under 40,000 active farmers in Norway show figures of production subsidies to the Norwegian Agricultural Directorate.

In total, 39,737 enterprises had applied for production subsidies during two rounds of applications in 2018 wrote Nationen newspaper.

That is 460 fewer applications than the previous year. At the same time, farms have decreased by 787 compared with the previous year, which, according to the Danish Agriculture Directorate, gives a better picture of the real decline.

In fact, even fewer active farmers can be counted. The Agriculture Directorate referred to the grant system last year, which suggested that there were two applications from the same farm.

“The number of applications is probably slightly higher than the number in active use,” said senior consultant, Jon Løyland of the Norwegian Agriculture Directorate.

He also confirmed that for the first time they had received less than 40,000 applications for production subsidies in agriculture.
