The use of antibiotics in Norway fell during the first ten months of the year compared with the same period last year.

“It is very positive that the health service has managed to achieve the ambitious goal in the action plan…

“Reduced antibiotic use is the most important weapon to fight resistance and thus keep antibiotics an effective medicine against infections,” director Hanne Andresen of the Pharmacy Association stated in a press release.

Antibiotic use so far this year is 6% lower than the same period last year. Since 2012, consumption has fallen by 36% per 1,000 inhabitants.

The Norwegian Directorate of Health has now tightened the guidelines for the use of antibiotics.
