A dog owner from one of Bergen’s neighboring municipalities did not go to the vet when boiling water fell on his dog. He has now been sentenced to six months in prison.

The man in his 30s tried to treat the wounds with ointment intended for humans. Only 14 days later, when the dog ran away, did it receive treatment, newspaper Bergensavisen writes.

“The court assumes that the dog suffered and was in pain for a long time, without the defendant taking the dog to the vet,” Hordaland District Court stated.

The dog owner denied criminal guilt and said he was on strong medication. He added that he had a feeling that he may have accidentally run into a kettle with hot water in it, and that water spilled over the dog who was sleeping in a cage nearby.

The man’s lawyer characterized the episode as an accident and asked for acquittal.

The court found that the man had acted with gross negligence and sentenced him to unconditional imprisonment for six months. In addition, he will be banned from owning, keeping, or being responsible for animals until further notice.
