Parents who are receiving social assistance has previously risked cuts in their support if the children were working during the school holidays. This will no longer be the case.

The Act was amended by  New Year, for the benefit of young people who are starting on a summer job these days. Municipalities will now shield the child’s income when assessing applications for social assistance.

– The days are gone when Nav could make cuts in the amount given in social assistance to families with adolescents who earn their own money,  Minister of Labour and Social Affairs anniken hauglie says.
– Equal opportunities
The reason for the ban is a desire both to make the  conditions for children growing up in poor families more equal and for a more concerted practice in the municipalities.
– When parents lose welfare money because their adolescents work, this will actually affect young people who often already are in a financially tight situation. There will be less money to go around in the family,  Hauglie says.

She thinks the old rule lead to unreasonable consequences.
– I am concerned that young people should are see that the work pays off. It is important that children of social assistance recipients find that they get something in return when they work. The aim is to prevent poverty from being passed on from the parents to their children,  the Minister says.
