The number of new hospital admissions of patients where the coronavirus is stated as the main cause of the hospitalization fell by 23% last week.

The decline is probably due to the fact that omicron causes milder disease and people in Norway are well protected, according to the FHI.

“So far, 218 new corona patients have been admitted to hospitals with COVID-19 in week 2, of which 112 with COVID-19 as the main cause. This is a preliminary 23% decrease in new admissions of patients with COVID-19 as the main cause for hospitalization from week 1,” the FHI wrote in its latest weekly report.

The number of inpatients in the intensive care unit also fell by 42% from the week before.

The FHI notes that the decline is likely related to the fact that the omicron variant causes less serious illness and that more people in Norway are now well protected through vaccination.

“The number of hospital admissions of people who are infected with SARS-CoV-2, but who have another main reason for the hospitalization, is increasing,” the FHI added.
