A teacher has been sentenced to pay NOK 200,000 to a student after other students perceived that she accused a student of racism.

The incident took place at a secondary school in Romerike in 2017, Rett24 writes.

It is unclear what happened prior to the teacher’s statements, but according to the teacher, the student made grossly racist statements after being reprimanded for violence. The student denied making such statements.

The verdict from Romerike and Glåmdal District Court states that the teacher, in a classroom context in 8th and 9th grade, “expressed herself in such a way that other students perceived she characterized the student as racist and/or Nazi.” The teacher said that it was important to stop such behavior and that “Anders Behring Breivik was someone who had not been stopped.”

The student sued the teacher and school with a claim for redress for defamation – and has now been upheld by the district court, which believes the statements violated the student’s sense of honor and reputation.

The teacher is sentenced to pay the student NOK 200,000. The school was acquitted. Nevertheless, the teacher and the school are sentenced to pay the student’s legal costs of NOK 637,000 together.

The teacher’s legal counsel, lawyer Åge Walle, says they will now consider whether to appeal the verdict.
