TV2 was the most successful Norwegian commercial television channel in 2021 with a 27% market share. They will look to capitalize on this growth during a sport-packed year ahead.

TV2 the most watched channel amongst 27-49 year olds in Norway

Figures for the 2021 year show that TV2 was the most popular commercial television channel in Norway. The channel experienced significant growth which resulted in having a 27% market share.

This has led TV2 CEO Olav Sandnes to declare to NTB that 2021 was a landmark year in which “…TV2 is the share winner, and we are incredibly proud of that.”

Though the channel’s market share of 27% was impressive, it faired better than NRK in the key 27-49-year-old segment. Growth was attributed to the rise in popularity of its news channel, TV2 Nyhetskanalen.

It will lose the rights to the English Premier League this year though it will show the Norwegian league instead.

Discovery Channel slips but Olympics could be golden

Not all was good news, however, for Discovery. The channel saw its market share slip, from 15.2% to 13.8%, during 2021. Yet there is a small glimmer of hope as the channel has the rights to broadcast the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing next month.

Traditionally, the Winter Olympics are extremely popular in Norway meaning a possibility for temporary growth.
