In one year the drop in oil prices contributed to a 44 percent increase in the number of unemployed within the ICT and engineering field. But the NITO president Trond Markussen is sure many will find new jobs and careers.

  • There are constantly evolving new needs, and entire new industries will develop. We know some of it, but we are also keen to see which direction this will take, says Markussen said.
Unemployment in Norway has increased over the past 20 months, and the increase was greatest within engineering and ICT  jobs, including brokers and consultants within industry.
The main reason is the decline in the oil industry, and about half of the unemployment increase for these three groups have taken place in Rogaland and Hordaland.
The challenge is that skills are perishable.
    – Candidates must attend courses and undertake some further education, and can with those relatively small adjustments go into other types of jobs, says Markussen.
