Parliament has adopted a new pension scheme for employees at sea. The scheme allows more seamen to be entitled to a pension.

In the new scheme, the earning time is reduced from 12.5 to 3 years. Furthermore, seafarers can earn a pension from their own income, as in other occupational pension schemes.

“The pension scheme for seamen was created in 1948, and a new pension scheme is necessary to secure seamen a pension adapted to today’s pension system,” says case chairman Helge André Njåstad (FrP/Progress Party) in a press release.

He believes that the new scheme ensures that far more seafarers can earn the right to a pension.

With the new scheme, pensions can be taken out and combined with work from the age of 62. The bill contains transitional rules from the current scheme to a new scheme for employees over 50 years of age.
