A total of 19,700 Norwegian citizenships were granted in 2020 – an increase of 49% from the previous year.

Last year, the number of transfers to Norwegian citizenship increased by as much as 49% from 2019, Statistics Norway (SSB) writes.

The sharp increase in the number of transfers to Norwegian citizenship is probably due to the Norwegian parliament (Storting) opening up for dual citizenship on January 1.

The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) noticed a strong increase in Norwegian citizenship applications after the change was adopted.

In 2020, the UDI registered 54,700 applications online, compared with 20,700 the year before.

Previously, the main rule has been that one must renounce his or her original citizenship if one wants to become a Norwegian citizen.
