A man in his 70s lost his life when his car drove into the tunnel wall in the Lærdal Tunnel on E16 on Tuesday. The man was alone in the car.

The emergency services were notified of the accident at 8:29 PM on Tuesday. The accident happened about 10 kilometers into the tunnel from the Lærdal side.

“Only the driver of the car was involved. Health services tried to help the person at the accident site, but at 9:31 PM, it became clear that this was – unfortunately – a fatal accident,” operations manager Eivind Hellesund stated in a press release.

He added that the cause of the accident and the cause of death were unknown for the time being. The man’s relatives have been notified. The tunnel was closed for just over three hours after the accident.

The Lærdal Tunnel, which is 24.5 kilometers long, is the world’s longest road tunnel.
