NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg says Russia has to pay a high price for any aggression against Ukraine.

“It would have serious political and economic consequences and a high price to pay for Russia,” Stoltenberg said at a press conference during a meeting of the alliance’s foreign ministers in Riga.

He added, however, that it is not clear what intentions lie behind the escalation of Russian troops in and around Ukraine that have been observed in recent months and that it is not certain that Russia has plans in place for its military to advance.

“We still have to be prepared for the worst,” he said.

The goal of the statement is to send a clear message to Russia to withdraw and avoid escalation, he added.
