6.5 million people in Malawi are affected by severe food shortages due to floods and droughts. Norway will provide NOK 53 million to the country.

– Malawi is heading towards the most serious humanitarian crisis in the country’s history.

We have therefore reallocated about 53 million kroner to remedy the acute distress in the country, said Foreign Minister Brende in a statement.

He is especially concerned for the children and says that part of the money is earmarked for the expansion of the school meal scheme in the country.

Malawi is one of Norway’s partners in southern Africa and the Norwegian authorities fear that the results of the development work may be threatened as a result of the food crisis.

The Norwegian contribution goes to the UN and NGOs in Malawi.
