The Norwegian government will introduce new sanctions against Russia on Friday. Norwegian ports will be closed for Russian ships, and Russian freight transport on Norwegian roads will be banned, Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reports.

The government thus plans to follow the EU’s sanctions against Russian ships and freight transport on roads, as Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) previously announced.

Roads will be closed to freight transport immediately, and ports will close on May 7. Exceptions from the sanctions will be made for fishing vessels, NRK writes.

The opposition has criticized the government for taking too long before closing ports. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also asked the Norwegian authorities to close Norwegian ports to Russian ships in his speech to the parliament (Storting) at the end of March.

The government, for its part, has argued that the EU’s decision must be adapted to Norwegian conditions, especially with regard to Norway’s cooperation with Russia on the sea areas in the north.
