Two out of five parents are concerned about drinking too much alcohol with children present at Christmas, according to a recent study by the alcohol-wise (alkovettorganisasjonen) organization, ‘Av-og-til’, that has been completed.

It’s particularly mothers who are worried, and believe alcohol fits negatively with Christmas, shows the study, which was conducted by Response Analysis for Av-og-til.

‘We in Av-og-til receive regular feedback from parents who say they are worried about other kids, who look like they are struggling and are unsure what to do. The survey tells us that many people find alcohol plays too large a role in Christmas celebrations’, said leader, Kari Randen, of Av-og-til.

One in five parents report that they have experience of family members who have imbibed excessively and become drunk with children present at Christmas.

Kari Randen believes drinking can be a source of conflict, and that even within families, there are quite different perceptions of where the border lies for what is okay and what is not okay with children present.

‘We’re not suggesting that everyone should cork the bottle, but we urge adults to reflect on how much they drink’, she says.
