It is more important than ever to strengthen ties in the High North, Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt (AP) stated on Tuesday.

“The Barents cooperation is Norway’s most important peace project,” Huitfeldt stated when she opened the summit of the Barents Council in Tromsø on Tuesday.

“This is about being good neighbors,” she said.

In addition to Huitfeldt, the foreign ministers of Russia and Finland are present at the meeting, as are the deputy foreign ministers of Sweden and Iceland. Representatives from Denmark, the EU, the Sami Parliament, and indigenous peoples are also present.

For the past two years, Norway has held the chairmanship of the Barents Council. Finland has now taken over the role.
