In 2020, the Norwegian state spent NOK 12 billion on consultancy services. Now, for the first time, the government is instructing the ministries to reduce the use of consultants.

In a letter, Minister of Local Government Bjørn Arild Gram (SP) emphasized that the purchase of services from the communications industry, in particular, should be reduced.

Gram told the newspaper Aftenposten that the government has a clear political priority to cut the use of consultants.

“It’s a kind of instruction. A marching order from the government to state enterprises to reduce and make a critical assessment of the use of consultants,” Gram said.

According to the minister, in 2020, the state spent NOK 12 billion on consultancy services. That corresponds to 10% of the total salary budget for the central government.

The Office of the Auditor General has also previously criticized the use of consultants by the state.
