Twelve women have been honored with a “Blue Plaque,” commemorating a location and a link to someone famous. Among the women honored are gay rights activist Kim Friele, actress Aud Schønemann, and rock singer Anne Grete Preus.

222 proposals, 36 finalists and 12 women honored

Twelve prominent women have been honored with a “Blue Plaque” throughout Oslo following a campaign for more female recognition. The Society for Oslo Byes Vel was behind the push for more female “Blue Signs” and saw some 222 proposals made in a couple of weeks. The 12 women honored were chosen from 36 finalists and the official announcement will be made on Women’s Day, March 8.

In a press release, The Society for Oslo Byes Vel said that the process was not easy and that all finalists could have been honored with their own “Blue Plaque.” The criteria for receiving this honor is that the person in question is not currently alive, had a connection to Oslo, and most have done something “important” for society at large.
