Crown Princess Mette-Marit has visited Gamlebyen School in Oslo as part of this year’s Literature Festival.

School reading week a royal draw

Students at Gamlebyen School had a royal visitor to their library as part of this year’s Literature Festival. The school has a “Reading Week” and Crown Princess Mette Marit joined in the discussion of the book, “Jørgen + Anne = sant” by Norwegian author, Vigdis Hjorth.

The library is seen as “the heart of the school” according to the school librarian, Elisabeth Jensen Lombnæs. She spoke of the importance of literature and the library to children at the school. “Here at the library” Lombnæs said, “the students are presented with different stories, and they get to read what they want in peace and quiet. Books and reading develop the children academically, but first and foremost, creativity, sensitivity, empathy, and the way we see ourselves and the world develop.”

The royal visit was hoped to encourage more children to read. Crown Princess Mette-Marit has a long association with literature, having visited the Frankfurt book fair and traveled to parts of Norway with the Literature Train.
