American researchers David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian have received this year’s Nobel Prize in Medicine.

The scientists have been awarded for the discovery of receptors that register temperature and touch.

Their research includes working on how “heat, cold, and mechanical forces can trigger nerve impulses.”

Nerve impulses make it possible for us to perceive and adapt to the world, as the Nobel jury pointed out.

Julius’ and Patapoutian’s win was announced by Karolinska Institutet in Sweden on Monday.
