Norwegians should celebrate National Day by singing “Ja vi elsker” together at 1 pm on May 17, suggests Culture Minister Abid Raja (Venstre).

A joint experience of the national anthem will be a great commemoration, says the Minister of Culture.

“Perhaps it is something that will stick in the memory… that this is what we did,” he said when he presented the idea at the government’s press conference on Friday.

At exactly 1 o’clock pm, the Defense Force’s nine facilities will fire salutes, with 21 shots. Immediately afterwards, the Norwegian Soloist Choir will sing the national anthem, and Raja hopes that all the people will sing along.

“I hope people will open windows, go out on the balcony, walk out into the street – two meters apart – and sing “Ja vi elsker ” at the same time,” he said.
