Fritt Ord’s press prize The Free Media Award is awarded to two Russian websites for cooperation with activists and for critical journalism in Russia.

The regional Russian online newspaper 7×7, which is located in the northwest of Russia, is awarded the prize for its cooperation between journalists, bloggers and activists. The Insider, which is based in Moscow, is awarded the prize for critical investigative journalism in collaboration with international media.

CivilNet from Armenia is also among the award winners. They receive the award for the role they played during the civil and political revolution in the country.

In addition, journalist Hafiz Babali receives the award for his efforts to expose corruption among the country’s politicians and financial elite.

Novoye Vremya magazine, based in Kiev, receives the award for investigative journalism on corruption and abuse of power among politicians in Ukraine.

Free Media Awards are presented by Fritt Ord and ZEIT-Stiftung. The award is given to Russian and Eastern European journalists and the media and seeks to strengthen the independent role of journalists.

“The five recipients are all courageous journalists who work extensively with important journalism that reveals corruption, organised crime, human rights violations and abuse of power,” says Director Knut Olav Åmås in Fritt Ord.
