The Bergen Festival has chosen composer Lars Petter Hagen to be its new director.

Composer, curator, and now head of a major Norwegian festival

Lars Petter Hagen will be the new director of the Bergen Festival. Hagen, 47, will take over the job left vacant after the resignation of Anders Beyer following a vote of no confidence in September last year.

The famed Norwegian composer topped a shortlist of 22 which was a mixture of both Norwegians and international applicants. Only 5 of the names on the shortlist, however, were female.

The festival, an annual celebration of music and cultural events, has taken place every year since 1955. Its traditions, however, hark back to the Bergen Music Festival organized by famous Norwegian composer, Edvard Grieg in 1898.

This year’s festival takes place between May 25 and June 8.
