Hansson nominates filmmaker who took on Communist Chinese repression in Tibet

Rasmus Hansson, a member of the Green Party (Miljøpartiet De Grønne, MDG), has nominated Tibetan filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. In an email to NTB, Hansson stated that Wangchen is “the memory of the Tibetans’ obvious demands for human rights.”

Wangchen, 47, was imprisoned in 2008 for 6 years by Chinese authorities for his documentary, Leaving Fear Behind. Featuring interviews from ordinary Tibetans it was seen as an indictment of the Chinese Communist repression of Tibet. Wangchen fled China after his release in 2014 and was granted political asylum in the United States where he now lives with his wife and son.

Hansson had met Wanghen this January when the filmmaker came to Norway to ask authorities to boycott the upcoming 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

  1. Thank you very much for nominating former Tibetan political prisoner Dhondup Wangchen, let it be realistic to honor him the Noble Peace Prize.
