More people left the Norwegian Church in 2019
Far more members left the Norwegian Church in 2019 than in 2018, new figures show. The Church Council puts the withdrawals in the context of the church election.
In 2019, 19,170 people left the Norwegian Church, while 3,400 registered in addition to registered baptisms, according to Church statistics. The corresponding figures for 2018 were 11,877 that left the Church, and 2,096 newly registered.
The Church Council states in a press release that they see the increase in the number of people who opted out in connection with the members receiving their election card for the church election in August.
The Norwegian Church has around 3.7 million members. This makes up about 70 per cent of the population.
