A drawing by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh is now on display at the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. The hitherto unknown illustration was previously held in a private collection.

On September 16, the drawing was shown to the public for the first time, according to the BBC. It has belonged to a Dutch family for more than 100 years.

The drawing has the signature “Vincent” and appears to be a sketch for the later work Worn Out. It shows an elderly, tired man sitting on a wooden chair with his head in his hands.

Art researcher Teio Meedendorp stated that it is “totally impossible” to estimate what the drawing is worth.

According to the museum, it was drawn in November 1882. Van Gogh was then 29 years old, living in The Hague and learning to draw.

Experts believe the work provides exceptional insight into the artist’s process during this formative period.

“It fits in perfectly with the many sketches we know from van Gogh’s time in The Hague, and the link to Worn Out is obvious,” Meedendorp explained in a statement on the museum’s website.

The material used is consistent with the early period of his art. In addition, damage to the corner on the back of the drawing can be explained by how van Gogh used to attach sheets of paper to the drawing board.
