On Sunday, Queen Sonja turns 84 years old. The day will be celebrated privately.

In the last couple of years, Queen Sonja has chosen to celebrate her birthday privately.

Queen Sonja, born Haraldsen, married the then Crown Prince Harald in Oslo Cathedral on August 29, 1968. In 1991, she became the country’s queen on January 17, after King Olav’s death. Queen Sonja then became the first Norwegian queen in almost 53 years.

She was then consecrated in Nidaros Cathedral in 1991 together with King Harald. She has thus marked 30 years as queen this year.

When King Harald took over as monarch in 1991, it was 52 years and two months since Queen Maud died. Maud had not been particularly active in the last years of her life, and Sonja was thus largely able to find her own place.

Interested in art

The queen is known for her interest in art and the outdoors, and she has also continued some of the causes that Maud supported, such as working with women’s organizations and emergency aid. She has also received praise for her efforts to use art to promote Norway abroad.

The queen is also an avid hobby photographer and has previously shared a number of nature photos she has taken on her many travels in Norway.

This summer, the royal couple has already been out on a cruise with the royal ship “Norway,” which was the first official voyage for the royal couple after the corona pandemic hit Norway. They plan to go on a new cruise with the ship later this summer.
