Anette Trettebergstuen, Minister of Culture (AP), will head to Los Angeles for the upcoming Oscars ceremony in support of Norwegian film and actors.

Government support as “Verdens Verste Menneske” battles for two Oscars

The Norwegian Minister of Culture, Anette Trettebergstuen, will head to Hollywood for the annual Oscars ceremony in support of the Norwegian film industry. Trettebergstuen will hope to be the first to celebrate a win for the Norwegian film, “Verdens Verste Menneske” (The Worst Person in The World). The film, directed by Joachim Trier, has Oscar nominations in two categories – “International Feature Film” and “Best Original Screenplay.” The lavish ceremony takes place on March 27.

Trettebergstuen’s first assignment, as the newly sworn-in Minister of Culture, was attending the worldwide premiere of “Verdens Verste Menneske” in Oslo last October. She spoke to NTB about the recent blossoming of Norwegian cinema. Hoping that the movie wins big in Hollywood, she said that “Norwegian film has an opportunity now that we must take advantage of, and I look forward to joining in and cheering on Joachim Trier, Eskil Vogt, Renate Reinsve, and the rest of the gang behind this fantastic film.”

Honorary Oscar for Liv Ullman, trip key to push Norwegian culture

There will be a very Norwegian flavor to this year’s Oscars ceremony as a Norwegian screen legend, Liv Ullmann, will also be presented with an “Honorary Academy Award” for her long career in film. The actress and director, 83, was the muse of famous Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman and was twice nominated for the “Best Actress” Oscar.

In the citation for her award, the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences will recognize Ullman for “bravery and emotional transparency that has gifted audiences with deeply affecting screen portrayals.” This will be awarded on March 25 with Trettebergstuen in attendance.

Following both award ceremonies, Trettebergstuen’s trip will then focus on business she will hope to push Norwegian cinema, video games, and music throughout the heartland of America’s entertainment business. She noted that “The attention Norway and Norwegian culture receive in connection with such nominations is an opportunity Norway must build on. The Norwegian Film Institute works very hard with Norwegian producers in connection with both Cannes and the Oscars to promote Norwegian productions to the public and investors, and I look forward to seeing with my own eyes how that job is done.”
