American pop artist Pink has spoken out in favor of the Norwegian beach handball team, which was recently fined for declining to play in bikini bottoms.
A debate has been ongoing about the clothing rules for beach handball, revved up by this year’s European Beach Handball Championships.
Namely, the International Handball Federation (IHF) rules mandate women’s uniforms as a bikini bottom and top, and men’s as shorts and tank tops. But this year, Norway’s women’s handball team decided to wear shorts instead of bikini bottoms (during a game against Spain in Bulgaria). The action resulted in a controversial fine of EUR 1,500.
Along with the Norwegian Handball Federation and Minister of Culture Abid Raja, several international celebrities are condemning the rules and the fine. Alecia Beth Moore, known as Pink, is one of many who have been publically critical. The singer is also among those who have offered to pay the team’s fine. So far, though, the Norwegian Handball Association has declined such offers.
Pink wrote on Twitter, “I’m VERY proud of the Norwegian female beach handball team FOR PROTESTING THE VERY SEXIST RULES ABOUT THEIR “uniform.” The European handball federation SHOULD BE FINED FOR SEXISM. Good on ya, ladies.”
