Queen Sonja is the highest supporter for this year’s TV telethon for NRK. This year, money will be collected for the help organization CARE and their work for women’s rights.
“The TV action will give women in some of the world’s poorest countries the opportunity to earn their own wages, decide on what happens to their own bodies and have their voice heard,” says Secretary General Gry Larsen of CARE Norway.
“Queen Sonja has a strong commitment to this year’s theme, and we are very happy and grateful that the Queen will our highest supporter for this year’s TV action/telethon,” says Larsen.
The funds collected this year will go to women in Niger, Mali, Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Jordan and Palestine.
The royal family has had a tradition of setting as supporters for the TV action/telethon, ever since its inception in 1974. Queen Sonja opened the very first fundraising campaign, then as a crown princess. She has been a strong supporter for several actions, most recently for the Red Cross in 2016.
This year’s TV action/telethon will be held on October 20th.
