Telenor saw a huge increase in social media activity amongst customers on New Year’s Eve 2021.

950% increase in Snapchat use, Facebook and Instagram saw rises too

Figures released by Telenor show that Norwegians love the use of social media on one of the biggest party nights of the year: New Year’s Eve. On the stroke of midnight, Snapchat saw the biggest increase, above normal levels of use, of 950% whilst Facebook (43%) and Instagram (27%) saw significant rises in activity too.

Petter Børre Furberg, C.E.O of Telenor Norway, said that “Christmas and New Year’s Eve is dominated by high use of social media. We noticed this especially this year, especially since we have not been able to gather as much as normal.”

He also noted that the use of Snapchat had “exploded in recent years, especially on New Year’s Eve.”

TikTok down 14%

However, not all social media apps saw a rise in activity. TikTok, a favorite of most people under the age of 20, saw a 14% drop in activity on the same night. Perhaps this was because seeing in the New Year is past their bedtime.

Some 14.6 million text messages were also sent on New Year’s Eve.
