King Harald and Queen Sonja will be lead the official opening of the new Munch Museum in Oslo in October, the museum informed NTB.

The museum opens at 5 PM on Friday, October 22.

“Throughout the weekend, we will be filling the museum and the area outside with experiences in the form of concerts, digital artwork, performance, light art, and surprises. All the exhibition halls are open, and our restaurants are ready with tempting menus,” the museum stated in a press release.

Due to the pandemic, the opening weekend will be divided into different time periods. The museum has released free tickets for the specific times people want to participate – and demand was so high its webpage crashed within minutes.

The new museum is five times larger than the old Munch Museum on Tøyen and will house the entire collection that painter Edvard Munch bequeathed to Oslo Municipality upon his death. The total price tag for the new museum is a hefty NOK 2.1 billion.
