Edvard Munch’s 2019 art award went to Jordanian Lawrence Abu Hamdan. Queen Sonja presented the award during the ceremony at the banquet hall in Oslo City Hall on Wednesday.

The prize has been handed out every other year since 2015. The winner of the Edvard Munch’s Art Award (EMAA) receives NOK 500,000 and a solo exhibition at the new Munch Museum in Bjørvika in Oslo.

EMAA is an international award to promote the development of significant international talents in visual arts.

In his justification, the jury has particularly pointed out that the 35-year-old is concerned with human rights and that he addresses important political issues through his art.

“Based on the music of the world, Hamdan, who defines himself as a ‘private ear,’ reflects convincingly on these issues through stripped-down, sophisticated and thought-provoking, often provocative expressions,” the jury statement says.
